What to expect
High above modern Bergama, ancient Pergamon preserves the remains of one of the ancient world’s leading cultural, political, and medical centers. This full-day small-group tour from Izmir explores the region’s Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine heritage. Travel to Bergama in an air-conditioned vehicle. Your guide meets you at your Izmir hotel, accompanies you throughout the tour, and returns you to your hotel at the end of the day. Visit the UNESCO-listed Acropolis, where monumental ruins reflect Pergamon’s importance as a center of government, culture, religion, and learning. Continue to the Asklepion, its renowned ancient healing center, and learn about the medical traditions and therapeutic practices of antiquity. Lunch is included and, depending on daily arrangements, may be served at a local carpet workshop or a restaurant in Bergama. Time may also be available for photographs, local craftsmanship, and selected shopping before returning to Izmir.
