What to expect
We are in the 16th century - the era of plague epidemics, the Council of Trent, Luther's theses and the greatest naval battle of Christendom against the Ottoman Empire - when Venice became the metropolis of courtesans. The courtesans were much more than just the escort of the Venetian elite and European rulers. They were sophisticated, intelligent “ladies” who had a significant influence on 16th century art and culture. But not all that shines is gold. Beauty, fame and wealth come at a price. Veronica Franco, one of the most famous courtesans in Europe, knew him all too well. We follow in the footsteps of the Venetian joy girls and the beautiful cultured Veronica Franco. The walk starts at Campo San Polo and leads via Rialto to St. Mark's Square.
