What to expect
Pochampally is a village of 5,000 looms where every household is part of one extraordinary craft tradition — the weaving of Ikat silk sarees whose technique was the first Indian textile to receive Geographical Indication protection. These are the sarees worn by Air India cabin crew. The design is not applied after weaving but embedded in the threads before the loom is set up, each thread individually tied and dyed to carry its exact portion of the pattern. The result floats between the weave layers in a way no other technique produces. This tour takes you into the homes of the weavers, through the 24 acre textile park and into the weaving museum where the village history and its connection with the Bhoodan land reform movement is told in full.
