Cairo is one of the largest and densest cities in Africa and the Arab world. It spreads along the Nile through medieval districts, mosques, churches, modern avenues and an urban life that rarely seems to stop.

Luxor is not an isolated archaeological park but a living city built over and beside ancient Thebes. The Nile separates temples associated with royal and religious power on the east bank from necropolises, villages and funerary mountains on the west. Visiting with children means respecting that geography, starting early and choosing carefully: the experience improves when families study a few tombs closely, rest through the fiercest heat and leave time for the river and present-day life.
