Et'hem Bey Mosque stands at one corner of Skanderbeg Square beside the Clock Tower. It is small compared with the modern buildings around it, but its paintings and history make it one of Tirana’s most important monuments.
The Pyramid of Tirana is one of the buildings that best summarises Albania’s transformations. It opened in 1988 as a museum dedicated to Enver Hoxha, the communist leader who had ruled the country for decades.
Skanderbeg Square is Tirana’s great civic centre. Within a few hundred metres it brings together Ottoman buildings, Italian architecture, monuments from the communist period and contemporary transformations. At the centre stands the equestrian statue of Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, the fifteenth century nobleman who became a national hero through his resistance to the Ottoman Empire.
